AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL issued on 11 september an urgent memo concerning
the arrestment and risks of ongoing torture and illtreatment while in
detention to:
1-Ft.HILLARY BOMA,who was arrested at a gunpoint at St. Mathews cathol
-ic cathedral in Khartoum on 1 August ,is reported to have confessed
to invlovement in the bombings in order to prevent Ft. LINO SEBIT being
tortured and illtreated.
2-Ft. LINO SEBIT, catholic priest at Archiocese of Khartoum who was arr-
ested on 29 July 1998 and taken to Khartoum North police investigation
bureau.At the begining he was charged with non-political allegations
that changed subsequantly to involvement in the bombings occured in 
Khartoum on June 1998.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL:believes that the two priests may be prisoners
of conscience, detained solely for peaceful expression of views critical
to the SUDAN government.

          DENIAL OF THE RIGHTS TO CHOOSE LEGAL REPRESENTATION

Advocate ABEL ALIER has confirmed on 15 October 98 that the name of
advocate Ghazi Suleiman was presented to the authorities as a member 
of the defence counsel for the 21 accuseds before THE FIELD MILITARY
MAJOR COURT,in the trial knowen as:sudan government Vs. Ft. HILLARY
BUMA AWEL& OTHERS.
Mr. ALIER expained further how the name of advocate GHAZI was rejected
twice by the military authorities and that he was not allowed to parti
-cipate in the defence counsel,moreover,he was not allowed even to enter
the premises where the court was convening.He also added:{ It is not 
true that GHAZI`s name was rejected by the accuseds,who in fact entrust
-ed me to form the defence counsel}
Advocate ALIER concluded that the absence of advocate Ghazi Suleiman
who is a leading human rights activists,has,no doubt ,a negative effect
on the defence cousel.
